Abstract :
Explores the collaborations between the French and American art worlds in the early 1960s. In looking at the work and friendships of Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Larry Rivers with the Nouveaux Réalistes, particularly Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle, what emerges is a change in attitude and aims between the first and second postwar generations, as well as the climate in which they were working. Chapters cover the history and historiography of the Cold War period in Paris and New York, the rise of New York as an independent cultural centre, and the reception of American art in Paris; the changing context of, and experimentation in, the art worlds and the various ideas that reflected and informed the attitudes of the artists and the art they produced; exhibitions which brought together the work and the persons of the Nouveaux Réalistes and the Neo-Dada artists; how Nouveau Réalisme became confused with American Pop Art; the rise of Los Angeles as a receptive site for the new art, the decentering of the contemporary art world, the return of Marcel Duchamp, and the continuing confirmation of an alternative modernist heritage; collaborative multi-disciplinary events and the emergence of a wider definition of 'artist'; the events of 1964, particularly Rauschenberg's winning of the Venice Biennale, reconsidered in light of the broader cultural changes of the period, challenging the prevailing oversimplifications regarding the New York-Paris rivalry. ;
