Abstract :
An analysis of the grotesque fountain constructed by the anti-Darwinian potter Wallace Martin draws attention to the declining fortunes of Victorian thinking about the grotesque in design. The fountain was partly a product of Wallace's desires to contribute to a tradition of ambitious ceramic creations such as the grottoes of the 16th c. French potter and Protestant martyr, Bernard Palissy. Palissy's influence is central to Victorian debates about the function and scope of the grotesque in design, and to the wider problem of organic realism, tied into preoccupation with natural history. The origins of the anxieties that led 'Victorian' to become shorthand for hideous design are to be seen in the way the terminology of the monstrous and grotesque is increasingly used from the 1850s by design reformers attacking so-called 'high' Victorian design. This debate centred on the problematic relationship between taste, function and realism. For reformers, abstraction was seen as a protection against the horror of the grotesque. The vogue for Japanese and primitive art encouraged the trend towards abstraction in design, while also offering new sources for the decorative grotesque. This can be seen most clearly in the writing and design work of Christopher Dresser. ;
