Abstract :
Examines the styles of the Norwegian painter and the English poet which display certain similarities arising from their exposure to, and reaction against, French Symbolist aesthetics of the early 1890s. Taking the year 1892 as a watershed in the development of both artists, frames the argument within a comparative analysis of Munch's painting Melancholy and Symons's poem On the beach. Symons's identification of 'the soul of things' is comparable to the pantheism found in Munch's paintings; the revolt against exteriority is a characteristic feature of Munch's style. Simons also proposes something akin to the 'psychic naturalism' of Munch's work, a truth-to-experience which is not necessarily a truth-to-nature; in effect, the accurate recreation of 'whatever exists and can be realized by the consciousness'. ;
