Abstract :
Taking Barnett Newman's quip that 'art is to aesthetics as ornithology is to birds', explores the complex conjunctions and disjunctions between understandings of art in the west and among the Abelam of Papua New Guinea, between 'bird-ness' as the metaphor of the latter's identity and 'man' as the metaphor (or myth), of modern western identity. The saying captures the incommensurability between a scientific and philosophical discourse (aesthetics and ornithology, anthropology and art history), and its object (birds, bird-ness and art). ;
