Abstract :
Chronicles the controversy over a site-specific installation designed by Buren for the 1971 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, New York. Discusses the objections of other artists involved in the exhibition, whose protests eventually influenced the museum to remove the Buren contribution (two large striped banners, one inside and one outside the museum) without the artist's consent. Places the entire episode within the context of American politics of the time, showing that the increasingly conservative political climate led to a growing suspicion of avant-garde art that did not strictly adhere to American modernism conventions, as exemplified by the light sculptures of Dan Flavin. ;
