Abstract :
Studies the so-called Encyclopedia mural paintings in the Cistercian abbey of Tre Fontane (late-13th to early-14th cs.; Rome), especially those images that include birds and cages. Gathers together pictorial and literary sources (from the 4th to the 14th cs., and from throughout Europe and the Near East, but with an emphasis on manuscript illumination in northern France and the murals of the Papal Palace in Avignon) to affirm that such images could be variously interpreted - i.e., as souls trapped within the flesh, or as cloistered monks sequestered and secure from the instabilities of the world, among other readings - and were widespread. ;
