- Studies Byzantine partial-gilt silver panels (including those in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection [Washington, DC], probably from the monastery of S. Sion near Myra on the Lycian coast). Summarizes the debate concerning their use (and that of numerous comparable objects), noting that while they are often found in pairs and called book-covers, several scholars have suggested that they might instead have served as parts of iconic revetments or other liturgical objects - a point with which the author agrees. ;
