Abstract :
Efforts to accurately identify rooms in the Palazzo Ducale where musical or theatrical entertainments were held during Monteverdi's service there, ca.1590-1612 - especially the location of the première of Orfeo in Feb 1607 - has led to the discovery of the original Sala degli Specchi. The room is clearly identifiable in the roof-space of a set of five rooms constructed in the 18th c. on the ground-plan of the Sala degli Specchi, perhaps following the partial collapse of the original roof. What remains today of the Sala degli Specchi is the attic of those 18th c. apartments, formerly connected to the rooms beneath by a plain wooden staircase that was removed and walled in about 50 years ago. The original Sala degli Specchi was an irregular trapezoid with a 20-segment umbrella vault. Of the 20 corresponding lunettes, 15 and their fresco decorations - Bacchanalia and gambolling putti - survive. ;
