Title :

The pornography of permissiveness : men's sexuality and women's emancipation in mid twentieth-century Britain

Abstract :
Traces the evolution of pornography in Britain, 1960s-1970s, first as an advocate of the new sexual permissiveness, later as anti-feminist and misogynist. Author argues that anti-feminist tirades in Penthouse and Men Only were remarkably prescient; pornographers recognized feminists as their natural enemy well before any feminists did the reverse. Collins concludes of mid-century pornography: 'It emerged from a pitiful, hypocritical existence before permissiveness to flower briefly in the sixties only then to succumb in the seventies to pornography's tragic flaw: that this genre of pleasure is curiously host to all manner of male anxieties and fears.' The article studies soft-core magazines in the round - their photospreads, profiles of models, consumer columns, editorials and sexology. ;
