Abstract :
Taking the 2001 exhibition The unfinished print (Washington, DC, National Gallery of Art) as a starting point, discusses the problem of aesthetic resolution in printmaking, and a related point, the influence of Romantic aesthetics. Ranging from different states in the 16th c. to the intentional fragments of the early 20th c., the prints displayed reveal a complex history of shifting tastes and processes. Essay observes the pivotal role of German Romanticism noting 'it was Friedrich Schlegel who famously proclaimed the value of inventing artistic fragments, and the Romantics in general who regarded all aesthetic statements as inherently incomplete, always in a provisional state of becoming.' Reflects on a legendary 1815 evening gathering at the house of Karl Friedrich Schinkel when the writer Brentano suggested a contest between literature and art. The semi-fanciful drawing of Heidelberg Castle which Schinkel executed for this occasion is extant (Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett), the contest embodying the Romantic appreciation for the mutuality and interrelation of the arts. ;
