Abstract :
Excerpts from the audio-video installation an inadequate history of conceptual art that was first exhibited at the Fine Arts Gallery (New York) and the Oliver Art Center (Oakland). The artist, Silvia Kolbowski, recorded (with audio and video) 40 artists' responses to a request for a description of a piece of conceptual art that they personally experienced or witnessed. The article includes transcriptions of selected responses and stills from the video. The following artists were included in the installation: Vito Acconci, Dennis Adams, Mac Adams, Connie Beckley, Dara Birnbaum, Mel Bochner, Hans Haacke, Eileen Hickey-Hulme, Mary Kelly, Joyce Kozloff, Louise Lawler, Les Levine, Jonas Mekas, Alan McCollum, Howardena Pindell, Lucio Pozzi, Yvonne Rainer, Dorothea Rockburne, Al Ruppersberg, Carolee Schneemann, Lawrence Weiner, and James Welling. ;
