Abstract :
Considers attempts to restart work on one of Bramante's most prestigious projects, the Palazzo dei Tribunali, begun under Pope Julius II, but abandoned on the Pope's death in 1513. Some of these endeavours shed light on the history of relations between Portugal and Rome in the 16th c. One of the earliest projects concerned the Portuguese ambassador D. Miguel da Silva and his attempt to make the Palazzo and its church of S. Biagio into a palace for the brother of the king of Portugal, the Cardinal Infante D. Alfonso. Some fifty years later Cardinal Giovanni Ricci da Montepulciano, closely linked to Portugal since his nunciature there between 1545 and 1550, had the same idea for his protégé Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici. Notes parallels with the royal palace of Xabregas in Lisbon which also remained unfinished. ;
