Abstract :
The delayed and ephemeral effect of Italian Renaissance influence on Portuguese painting can be more readily appreciated by examining a few paradigmatic examples of Portugese painting dating from the reign of D. Manuel. Looks first at the works of Flemish painters active in Portugal and at the importance Flemish painting had assumed in Portugal at the beginning of the 16th c. In sum, the Italian influences on Portuguese painting at this time were essentially due to cultural changes brought about by greater receptivity towards humanism from Italian sources from the 1530s onwards. The dominance of Flemish training among Portuguese painters and the constancy in taste was diluted to a certain extent by these Italian influences, which resulted in a predominantly eclectic language. ;
