Abstract :
Tile-tombs are probably best understood as grave markers, in the manner of a memorial brass. The fragmentary evidence indicates that such memorials were part of the floor, not raised above it. Very few of these tile-tombs have have survived in any reasonable state of preservation. Concludes that in France tile-tombs were laid down especially during the 13th and 14th cs., and chiefly in Basse-Normandie, where there was minimal competition from incised slabs. There was continued production until the mid 17th-c. Some tile-tombs have been found in England as well. ;
