Abstract :
Scrutinizes an unrealized project for a statue to Louis XVI in Brest, analyzing it in relation to established practices for French royal monuments from the 17th and 18th cs. Four sculptors competed for the project: Pajou, Houdon, Gois, and Mouchy. Louis XVI nominated the Parisian architect Jallier de Savault. Article considers the overall project through the focus of the statue, as the relation between statue and architecture is reciprocal. Three memoirs are extant - by Jallier de Savault, Gois, and Houdon, which permit the study of the terms in which this relation was conceived. Jollet writes 'The relation was, of course, more than a simple juxtaposition: the sculptors were to place their respective statues within the framework of Jallier's project. We will here be specifically concerned with an intermediary element which belongs to both sculpture and architecture - the pedestal'. ;
