Abstract :
Considers the question of how appropriate ideal schemes were for the functions they had to perform as churches. Takes the example of Michele Sanmicheli's pilgrimage church of the Madonna di Campagna, near Verona, built in 1559 to house a miracle-working image of the Virgin Mary. Concludes that his attempt to give the exterior the appearance of an ideal building was compromised because of the requirements of the interior. The internal arrangement of the Madonna di Campagna, and probably of most other pilgrimage churches, was generally regarded as being of greater importance than the exterior. ;
