The Virgin's wool

Author :

Abstract :
Argues that the unusual striped garments worn by the Virgin and saints in the stained glass of Chartres cathedral clerestory bespeak the local wool cloth produced in the region. The special striped wool also appears in the merchant trade windows in the apse and ambulatory. The Virgin was associated exegetically with wool, and the link between the Virgin with the local wool of Chartres is clear - the Virgin's connection with it imbued the local wool with prestige. Williams writes 'the scenes infer the wool is quality merchandise, available in local shops, and strikingly endorsed by the Virgin herself.' Notes that in later windows of other churches, the striped cloth depicted in the stained glass represented the idea of sumptuous cloth, rather than a local product. ;
