Abstract :
The marble altar-shrine of S. Fina (Seraphina), carved by Benedetto da Maiano between 1472 and 1477, forms the central focus of the new chapel that was built c.1469-78 in the Collegiata of San Gimignano to honor that town's local patron saint who had died in 1253. The new marble altar-shrine was part of an ensemble that was commissioned by the town council to enhance Fina's cult following and to promote the official approval of her feast by the papacy, thereby increasing the prestige of the tiny town. The marble shrine superseded a modest ensemble, whose main decorative element seems to have been the double-sided painted tabernacle for Fina's reliquary bust executed by Lorenzo di Niccolò Gerini. Essay discusses the reliquary tabernacle, narrative reliefs, sarcophagus, and the apex relief depicting the Madonna and Child flanked by angels. ;
