Abstract :
Looks at Greenberg's critical review of Herbert Read's The art of sculpture, before examining his subsequent emulation of the British sculptor Anthony Caro. Discusses Greenberg's attempt at national stereotyping in his essay on Caro in which he compares Caro's work to British engineering design and to Perpendicular gothic. Argues that the essay implies the possibility of a progressive provincialism in British art, and concludes that although a younger generation of artists who studied under Caro may have rejected the more purist aspects of Caro's and Greenberg's approach, they could have used Greenberg's essay on Caro as a catalyst. For an important aspect of the art of the post-Caro generation is the cultivation of a progressive provincialism. ;
