Abstract :
Looks at Benzoni's position in the history of 19th c. Italian sculpture in relation to his contemporaries in Europe and the United States. The association of Benzoni's sculptures in the Detroit Institute of Arts with the American sculptor Randolph Rogers who had advised their original purchaser, J.W. Waterman, suggests stylistic relationships with Rogers's own work and career. The taste for decorative neo-classical works, as well as those conceived in a more sentimental vein, appealed to a foreign clientele eager to acquire Italian sculptures to decorate their newly constructed mansions. Benzoni worked on at least 25 commissions for British clients during his visit to London in 1851, compositions that also appealed to American collectors travelling in Europe during the last quarter of the 19th c. ;
