New international forms or traditionalist Polish styles? : aspects of Warsaw architecture in the early twentieth century

Abstract :
Examines some Polish buildings in the same way as those of most Western countries during the last 30 or so years, and reflects on the ways in which Polish architectural historians have evaluated these works. Looks especially at the architecture of Stefan Szyller, Oskar Sosnowski, and Jan Koszczyc Witkiewicz. Argues that an international comparative study of the discourses of, and the institutions supporting, traditionalism, vernacularism and nationalism, rather than concentrating in an essentialist way on some of their forms, might allow Poland to be treated not as peripheral but as a central country. ;
