Abstract :
Reexamines L'Orange's influential interpretation of the Arch of Constantine as a historical object, questioning whether there is any bridge between his meticulous scrutiny and his understanding of the Arch as a bearer of meaning. Investigates the notion of two visual languages in the Arch of Constantine: the hieroglyphic and the abstract. L'Orange understood the stylistic features of the reliefs of the Arch as representing the structure of the Late Antique world view. ;
