- Traces late 19th-early 20th-c. urban projects (by the civil government) for a thoroughfare in the Borgo area in Rome, and examines the political and cultural controversies they engendered. Observes that the plan to create an axis with a perspective view of S. Peter's carried an emblematic significance in the period immediately following the Unification of Italy, because it symbolized the reaffirmation of the spiritual monopoly and centrality of the papacy in the life of the city. ;
