Abstract :
Looks at the connections forged between land, political identity and textile production articulated in the writings of Olivier de Serres, which included prescriptions for both gardening and silk production. The embroidered forms he recommended linked two essential elements of his philosophy of gardening: horticulture and fashion. He argued that a market-orientated land management strategy could become an effective tool of politics, advancing the well-being of France. Although the links between garden and commodity design in France during the 17th c. may have centred on textiles, parterre designs became so identified and admired as French that these forms had an authority in many other decorative arts. The aménagement tradition of land improvement established by de Serres provided the political rhetoric for the French material politics that became so central during the reign of Louis XIV. French land at the level of the state was used more extensively and systematically for political ends, as the gardens at Versailles, under the supervision of Colbert, demonstrate. French parterres were testimonies to the possibilities of using land systematically to make it gloriously productive yet, simultaneously, distinctively French. ;
