Abstract :
Writes that 'Eros (Greek), Amor (Latin) or Cupido (Italianized Latin), in the guise of a deceitful, seductive adolescent, made an artistic comeback in Italy during the 1530s. The Cupid in the Michelangelo-Pontormo Venus and Cupid (Florence, Galleria dell'Accademia) exemplifies a stage in the evolution of this persona that had its genesis in the Renaissance emulation of Greek epigrams, statuary and style.' Traces the evolution and literary and artistic sources of the seductive Cupid image during the early 16th c., when it appeared mainly in paintings commissioned by the rulers of small northern and central Italian courts, and focuses on the Michelangelo-Pontormo painting (Florence, Galleria dell'Accademia) and on Bronzino's Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time (London, National Gallery). Points to the influence on both of an episode in the Cupid and Psyche story in Apuleius's The golden ass. ;
