Abstract :
Discusses the late medieval origins and Renaissance development of the technique of preparatory transfer drawings (i.e., cartoons). Observes that it is probable that the many replicas and derivations from Michelangelo's Venus and Cupid cartoon were economically motivated because of the artist's reputation, and notes that Renaissance workshops were specialized in the reproduction from models. Posits that in practice, substitute cartoons were made from the original (which was left in the hands of the artist, collector, etc.), and that the painted replicas were produced using these substitute cartoons, which were consumed and discarded (and hence are no longer extant). Also speculates that the substitute cartoons were composed of separate sheets that may not always have reproduced the entire composition, a working practice that could account for the differences in the painted replicas. ;
