Abstract :
Re-examines the fruitful collaboration between Michelangelo and Venusti which began in the 1550s. The Cesi Chapel Annunciation altarpiece painted by Venusti (lost), was based on Michelangelo's drawing (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library). Its style established a paragone, inviting comparison with Raphael whose decorations were in the nearby Chigi Chapel in Santa Maria della Pace. Notes Michelangelo's indebtedness to the antique Cesi Juno in this and other designs made for Venusti. Venusti was responsible for propagating many of Michelangelo's popular images in smaller pictures such as Christ in the Garden, and Madonna del Silenzio. The multiple painted versions of the latter are based directly, or indirectly, on a red chalk drawing in the Duke of Portland collection, London. Interprets the iconography of the unconventional gesture of the Virgin's left hand. Concludes that Venusti's interpretation and realization of many of Michelangelo's drawn concetti resulted in the creation of some highly original works that appealed to the aesthetic values of contemporaries, and that their relationship should be seen as an example of multiple authorship. ;
