Abstract :
An important 13th-c. monastic building has recently been rediscovered at the site of the Benedictine nunnery at Wherwell, Hampshire. This building contains a roof of raised aisle construction which may be the earliest known example of this form. Six bays of the original roof are almost completely intact and dendrochronology has shown them to belong to two building phases: 1250 and 1280. The earlier phase dates from the time of abbess Euphemia whose recorded building works include a new and large infirmary. There is good reason to believe that this rediscovered building may in fact be her infirmary, although other possibilities are considered. Recently, too, a geophysical survey has established the site and plan of the fine abbey church, comparable in scale to that of Romsey Abbey. ;
