Abstract :
Discusses the work of the Armenian architect Trdat. Describes repairs he made to the dome of Hagia Sophia after it collapsed in 989. Explores the reasons behind the hiring of Trdat, an Armenian, to work on a Byzantine project, suggesting that Trdat's provision of an architectural model and drawings may have played a role. Notes that although there was a history of the use of architectural models and drawings in the Caucasus, no parallel seems to have existed for their use in Byzantium. Discusses Trdat's work on Ani Cathedral, Argi Cathedral, and the church of Gagkasen in Armenia (now northeastern Turkey). Suggests that Armenian architecture influenced Trdat's work on Hagia Sofia and that Hagia Sofia influenced Ani Cathedral and the church of Gagkasen. ;
