Abstract :
In December 1847 the Ecclesiologist published a review of three Leeds churches, two dating to the 19th c., and the early 17th-c. church of S. John designed by an unknown architect. Despite displaying almost every aspect of church design the journal despised, S. John's is not criticised in the article. Suggests that the author recognised that in its broad principles it offered historical legitimacy to the ecclesiologists' agenda, in terms of individual patronage, and gothic as the most appropriate idiom for church building. The article's use of language, arguments and conclusions was part of the Ecclesiological Society's agenda for change. ;
