Abstract :
The historiography of the Romanesque fabric of the abbey church of Ronceray provides a broad date span of pre-1028 to ca.1130, which, through close analysis of specific aspects of the church (nave vaults, pier design and articulation), in relation to dated, or closely datable, buildings, can be narrowed down. Considers ancient Roman sources for the nave elevation, substantial buttresses and large windows. Discusses the chevet, with opus reticulatum, shafted buttresses, and modillons à copeaux. Supports the consensus that the nave predates the chevet, although typologically the rubble masonry with ashlar dressing in the nave is earlier than the ashlar and decorative masonry in the chevet, and the plain ashlar of the transept. Concludes that the church building may have started around 1040 under the patronage of Fulk Nerra's son Geoffrey, to commemorate the death of his father. This would explain the continuity of motifs of Fulk Nerra's works, and account for the rebuilding in a monumental 'Roman' manner. The architectural detailing of the Ronceray also accords with churches around the mid-11th c. ;
