Abstract :
The concept of the physical meaning of comfort developed from political and social ideas on luxury and necessity. The concept of the cottage as a comfortable house, as opposed to previous associations with poverty, developed after 1750 from fashions in landscape architecture. Architectual pattern books provide evidence for the new association of the cottage with comfort, first with designs for garden buildings, then cottages, reflecting the stylistic avant-garde, especially in varieties of neoclassicism. Attention to standards of architectural comfort prompted the genre for the philanthropic model cottage which acquired generic characteristics. Those cottages for families of property, however, had more privacy and specialised spaces. Convenience and comfort eventually overtook picturesqueness in the design of cottages, followed by a concern with elegance. By 1800, ornamented cottages and villas were seen as part of a continuum of design connecting comfort and elegance. Contrasts the situation in America where British developments in architectural comfort were not taken up until the 1830s. ;
