Abstract :
Presents the full report on the archaeological excavations undertaken at the site of a supposed 'chapel' in Anglesey. The large-scale excavation was prompted by the accidental discovery of a stone slab-lined grave of early medieval type. Work revealed that the hill promontory had played a significant role in the early landscape, from the late Neolithic period to the early medieval inhumation cemetery. This extensive cemetery was grouped around a central 'special' grave and comprised both slab-lined cists and simple grave pits of various sizes, groupings and orientations with implications for population and burial practices. These were dated on comparative evidence broadly within the period of the 5th to 10th c. A significant discovery relating to this phase was the 17th-c. records of a previously unpublished inscribed memorial stone of the 6th to 7th c. from this site. Includes specialist reports on artefactual evidence. ;
