Abstract :
Reexamines the presumed stylistic progression of Sienese painting. These stylistic phases are typically thought to begin with a 'golden age' of ca.1280-1348 - when such figures as Duccio, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini were active - followed by a series of retrospective, even regressive, responses through the 15th c. Argues for caution in adopting 20th-c. models of artistic development. Creativity in early Sienese painting should be understood in the context of workshop practices and respect for tradition which resulted in such phenomena as the remodeling or repainting of pre-existing works. Different stylistic modes combined and collided at the same historical moment. The author writes 'what is needed is a theoretical paradigm sophisticated enough to deal with the complicated and intricate series of visual quotations and references that we find in the Sienese artistic context, and indeed in many contexts of Italian art in the 14th and 15th cs.'. ;
