Abstract :
Studies Dix's politically charged Dada Triptych which consisted of three partially collaged oil paintings all painted separately in 1920: the Skat Players (Berlin, National Gallery), the Barricade (destroyed), and Prague Street (Stuttgart, Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart). The three paintings were exhibited, for the first and only time, as this loosely joined single work at the Berlin Secession in 1921. The central painting Barricade depicted an urban battle, the other two portrayed disabled World War I soldiers. The essay contends that Dix's Dada Triptych anticipated Benjamin's models of dialectical imagery and historical materialist critical practice. The author writes, '... by integrating montage into its formal, material, and semantic structures, Dix's triptych potentially produced an experience of his time in which the present was exploded and analyzed in relation to a constellation of interrelated historical precursors.' Concludes that the examples of Dix and Benjamin suggest a post-stratigraphic vision of cultural history. That is, cultural history isn't to be understood as a nonreversible evolutionary development, but rather as a movement constantly renewed by citing and recombining what has come before. ;
