Abstract :
On Santi di Tito's fresco Solomon Building the Temple (or Solomon Giving Directions for the Construction of the Temple) at the headquarters of the Accademia del Disegno in the Cappella della SS. Trinità in SS. Annunziata, Florence. Santi's fresco is the most extensively documented work in the chapel; much of this material is published here for the first time. The subject of the painting, Santi's first major fresco in Florence, is unprecedented in monumental Florentine painting. Its theme is consistent with the multiple functions of the Academy: the winged victory holding the building plan signals the triumph of disegno, the theoretical basis of Academy procedure, while the depiction of Solomon with the features of Franceso I de' Medici alludes to the Medicean connections of the Academy. The explicit religious message of the fresco also signals that the chapel was used primarily for the Academy's confraternal activities. ;
