Abstract :
First looks at John Singleton Copley's Portrait of Paul Revere, then turns to focus on Paul Revere's famous Sons of Liberty Bowl (both 1768 and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston). Points out that the Copley portrait of Revere with a teapot and tools does not show him in working clothes but in a white linen shirt, the teapot and linen in the portrait perhaps symbols of Tory and Whig, reflecting the fact that Revere worked for both. A boycott against goods imported from England - including tea and linen - shaped both social and economic factors in 1768. And it was in this tense environment that Revere made his silver liberty bowl, commissioned by the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty was a group of radical Whigs who used the bowl during their covert meetings. The creation of the bowl would have been considered an act of defiance.or American silver of its period, its design probably inspired by the shape of Delft punch bowls. Its inscription commemorates an act of colonial defiance of the British in 1768. ;
