Abstract :
First recounts various points of view concerning the issue of whether or not the Jesuits were responsible for a 'Jesuit style' of the arts. Often equated with baroque or Counter-Reformation styles, Jesuit-sponsored art during these periods has been frequently argued by art historians as having a consistent and identifiable 'Jesuit style.' Points out that this view has gone through various stages of acceptance and rejection. The second part of this essay touches on a wide variety of Jesuit monuments throughout the world, including examples in South America, Mexico, Asia, and Europe. Incorporates discussion of the state of research; footnotes list extensive bibliographical references. In conclusion the author suggests that the 'Jesuit style' is elusive as a concrete and uniform concept. He writes 'instead of dominating everything around it as its critics have for so long maintained, it ends up accommodating and assimilating'. ;
