Abstract :
Highlights some of the general characteristics of trecento panel painting, by focusing first on one particular type, the lunette-shaped panel. Asks why panel painting was preferred in an architectural setting to more traditional media, such as mosaic or mural painting. Suggests that it was a medium better suited to producing the effects of brightness and splendor, which were ideals in all aspects of late medieval culture. Includes discussion of paintings by Paolo Veneziano, Roberto d'Oderisio, Francesco d'Oberto, Priamo della Quercia, the Master of Badia a Isola, Taddeo Gaddi, and Giovanni da Milano, among others. ;
