Abstract :
Looks at the philosophical and poetic tradition of Henry of Avranches's commentary on Hugh's choir at Lincoln and what this means for any modern interpretation of the cathedral. His conceit about the interplay of art and nature departs from precedent in associating these ideas with an actual building rather than a literary topos, suggesting that the cathedral may have been intended to display both art and artifice. The context in which Hugh's choir was designed and built (1190s), is generally consonant with the account of it in the Metrical life of S. Hugh. Henry's concept of the building as both material and living church amplified the ideas of those who built the new east end of Lincoln over the body of its founder Remigius and his successors. Reflects on connections between this idea and the florid extremes of the 'Early English' style and proposes that Henry's understanding of the 'supranational' qualities of the choir (built for a Burgundian whose circle included clerics trained in Paris) is as fruitful a contribution to our understanding of the design as any subsequent concern with Englishness. ;
