Abstract :
Using documentary evidence, maps, architectural drawings and other pictorial evidence, considers the site of Bedford House before and after 1627 when the 4th earl of Bedford succeeded, analyzing in detail the changes made to the house and the laying out of an Italianate garden. Plans support the idea that the northern extension of the Bedford House garden was a planned element of the whole complex of the Covent Garden Italianate piazza, a prestigious residential development that took place from the early 1630s, designed by Inigo Jones. A drawing attributed to de Caus, of a ground-based niche may have been part of a proposed grotto design for Bedford House. The extant grotto at Woburn Abbey, and the drawing (London, Victoria and Albert Museum), strengthen the contention that they were both executed by de Caus for the 4th earl. A stonemason's bill provides evidence that Edward Carter was also working for the earl at this time. The restrained astyler design of the Evidence House (used to store Bedford estate documents), here attributed to Carter, is the only clue to the architectural style of the new north range. A view of Covent Garden painted ca.1649-1656, and the garden layout in an etching by Hollar of ca.1658-1660, almost certainly show surviving features of the 'fourth side of the Piazza,' designed by de Caus, working closely with Edward Carter but with the obvious influence of Jones. ;
