Abstract :
Reconsiders the origin of Sir Joshua Reynolds's article parodying the self-styled 'connoisseur' which appeared in the Idler magazine in 1759. Hitherto, scholars have presumed the essay to have been a direct response to the theories promoted by Hogarth in his Analysis of beauty (1753). Challenges this by examining a less well known book which appeared four months before the Idler essay - Benjamin Ralph's The School of Raphael, or the student's guide to expression in historical painting. This manual provided traditional academic rules combined with 'modern' theories promoted by Hogarth. Illustrations of heads in the School of Raphael resemble those in an etching of Four Heads from the Raphael Cartoons at Hampton Court, allegedly part of the Hogarth estate, which hints at a direct contact between Ralph and Hogarth. Concludes that Ralph's fusion of academic and Hogarthian terms would have been anathema to Reynolds and submits that Reynolds's essay was a direct response satirizing these new ideas. ;
