Abstract :
Re-examines the issue of the date (1328), and Franciscan provenance of the Rimini Antiphonal (Sydney, State Library of New South Wales, MS Richardson 273), decorated by Neri da Rimini. Focuses on the contributions made to the book by the scribe Bonfantino da Bologna, and the unknown scribe who, sometime after 1582, rewrote the texts in a more fashionable hand in keeping with contemporary post-Tridentine practice in music. A codicological description of the manuscript is followed by an examination of the liturgical contents, relating these to the issue of its provenance. Concludes with a study of the palimpsest music in relation to late medieval liturgical practice and the transmission of liturgical texts from the mid-13th to the early-17th cs. A detailed description of the contents of the manuscript follows the essay. ;
