Abstract :
When Helen Gill Viljoen died in 1974 she left, incomplete, a 34 chapter biography on Ruskin nearly 1,400 pages in length. It was tentatively entitled Dark star: the life and work of John Ruskin. This article explores some of the most consequential discoveries made by the Ruskin scholar by examining her papers which are now kept at the Morgan Library in New York. Notes how Ruskin held J.M.W. Turner in particularly high esteem, an opinion that was shaken upon Ruskin's discovery of erotic drawings by Turner after Turner's death. Ruskin believed that good art could only be made by the pure of heart, and this theory had been fundamental in his writings. A subsequent 'unconversion' and period of questioning followed. Viljoen observed that this began in an 1858 visit to Turin where he admired - for the first time - the sensuality of Veronese's Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. ;
