Abstract :
Studies the two paintings thought to have been directly commissioned by Ralph, Duke of Montagu, during Lafosse's stay in England in 1690-1692. Argues that Lafosse's painting previously believed to depict Mars and Venus should actually be entitled Rinaldo and Armida: it illustrates an episode from Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberta concerning the abduction of the crusading knight Rinaldo by the Saracen witch Armida. Suggests that the painting was likely executed in France and that it should probably be dated slightly earlier than previously thought, to ca.1686-87. Further suggests that the Rape of Europa was painted as a pendant to the Rinaldo and Armida, perhaps in the interval between Lafosse's two trips to England during the early 1690s. It is less likely that the two canvases were painted in London as part of the Montagu House decorations. ;
