Abstract :
Among the great questions in research into the history of Norwegian buildings is the dating of Urnes stave church. Based on stylistic grounds the carvings date back to the third quarter of the 11th c. The dendrochronological samples from the inner face of the wallboards give datable rings from 1048, 1056, and 1064. As it was not possible to find re-used materials containing the edge of the bark, the date of logging could not be established. As the materials in the present church were felled around 1130 and there is no trace of fire, there is reason to believe that the previous church on the site was built during the final decades of the 11th c. ;
