- Abstract :
- Traces the changing meaning of the figure of Venus in the 18th-c. English garden. Discusses examples at the temples of Venus at Stowe and West Wycombe Park in Buckinghamshire; Rousham in Oxfordshire; and William Shenstone's The Leasowes in Salop. Identifies as the principal change during the 17th and 18th cs. a shift from an emphasis on the allegorical and general to the specific and individual and relates it to changes in the nature of England's government during this period. ;
