- Abstract :
- Studies the history and imagery of Edward J. Poynter's painting The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon (1890; Sydney, Art Gallery of New South Wales). Investigates the artist's use of archaeological and orientalist sources and argues that a Victorian audience would have recognized parallels between Poynter's image of ancient monarchy and modern-day Britain. Discusses the artist's decision to represent the Queen as non-European, i.e., as a member of one of the British Empire's colonial peoples. ;
