Abstract :
Presents a previously unpublished document that clarifies the motive and patron behind a series of frescoes by Giulio Carpioni at Villa Caldogno (Caldogno). Asserts that the paintings, which represent scenes from Giambattista Guarini's Pastor fido, were commissioned from Giulio Carpioni by Angelo Caldogno after he instructed the removal of a staircase in one of the villa's rooms. Examines a series of contracts dated 1673-1677 (also unpublished) that document the rebuilding of the Palazzo Caldogno in Vicenza and its decoration by Guilio Carpioni. Appendix: documents. ;
