Abstract :
Examines the medieval architectural and later restoration history of the church of S. Pietro, Iolo, and studies its 12th-18th-c. works of art (e.g., 14th-15th-c. mural paintings, paintings by Matteo Rosselli and Giovanni Pietro Naldini, sculpture, liturgical objects) and furnishings. The church is first documented in the 11th c., as dedicated to S. Donatus, bishop of Arezzo, but by 1049 it was already called S. Pietro. Includes chapters on the 10th-13th-c. system of baptismal churches (i.e., pieve) in the Prato region, and on the 11th-20th-c. history and urbanism of Iolo. Appendix: essay comparing the pieve with other Romanesque religious architecture in the Prato area. ;
